VERTICAL EXPANSION USING TENSAR GEOGRID GIVES TRIMBLE COUNTY POWER PLANT A LIFT

When LG&E’s coal burning power plant in Trimble County, KY needed more capacity in their existing ash pond for containing more fly ash and bottom ash, they turned to a geogrid reinforced vertical expansion system on top of their existing berms. The solution supplied by Site Supply: A 4,000 lineal foot by approximately 25′ high Tensar UX geogrid reinforced soil slope with rock filled welded wire basket facing was constructed near vertical around the perimeter of the main pond with ramps to the adjacent auxilary pond. This system gave the plant many years of added capacity without having to purchase land for a new pond, and the existing pond footprint remained in place because the toe of slope of the new slope system matched the existing berm toe.
