BioHaven Floating Islands bring an innovative twist to constructed wetlands.
BioHaven® Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs) are designed around the same principles as a wetland–utilizing the natural processes of plants and microbes to improve water quality. A FTW consists of wetland vegetation growing on a matrix floating on the surface of a body of water. Beneath the floating matrix, a hanging network of roots, rhizomes and attached bio¬film is formed.
This provides an active surface area for biochemical processes, as well as physical processes such as ¬filtering and entrapment. The objective is to maximize the contact between the root/bio¬film network and the polluted water. Independent research has proven the efficacy of BioHaven in reducing nitrates, phosphorus, ammonia, total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), heavy metals, and coliform.
