Uniaxial geogrids are primarily used to reinforce soil for grade separations such as in modular block retaining wall and mechanically stabilized slope applications. These geogrids have high strength in one primary direction and interact well with soil and aggregate fill materials to create a reinforced fill zone that can stand to near vertical slopes.  Uniaxial geogrids are typically comprised of either High Density Polyethylene or Coated Polyester yarns. They are resistant to chemicals and abnormal soil pH levels making them perfect for all types of soil conditions (i.e. clay, silt, shale, aggregate, ash, etc.)

Landfill Expansion

Other uses for Uniaxial geogrids are evident in waste containment applications to steepen and heighten embankment slopes of existing dikes surrounding pond structures. This can provide additional air-space to an existing pond structure without increasing the footprint of the dikes.  Landfill space is at a premium due to planning restrictions, causing the need for vertical expansion of municipal waste and coal ash landfills. Tensar Uniaxial Geogrids are used for constructing mechanically reinforced soil slopes that can be constructed near vertical. This is perfect for adding landfill capacity (air space) of existing municipal waste landfills and coal ash containment ponds because it gives you the ability to create taller perimeter berms all inside the same footprint, making permitting and right of way issues much simpler.

Additionally UX geogrids can be used where new landfills are placed on top of old landfills. In this case, the uniaxial geogrid is used to carry the additional load of the new landfill so as to lessen the load felt by the underlying geomembrane. This prevents the existing geomembrane from rupturing in the event of void formations in the old landfill.  Constructing and adding fill on top of an existing municipal waste landfill can be hazardous because the decomposition of underlying waste can create voids, and the potential for collapse. You can also use uniaxial geogrids as veneer stability for secondary containment applications such as tank farms. When the grid is placed on slopes for this application, the transverse bars of the uniaxial geogrid act to confine and prevent the overlying stone fill from washing or eroding down the slope.
