Soil Reinforcement Using Erosion Control Blankets and Turf Reinforcment Mats

Erosion control methods that implement erosion control blankets (ECBs) and turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) involve placing and securing the products on seeded contoured areas such as slopes and channels in order to minimize soil runoff during rain events. When a storm hits, the washing away of soil is kept to a minimum due to the ECB or TRM, and eventually vegetation will grow in these areas making them naturally stable once again.

Erosion Control Blankets (ECB’s) will provide temporary soil stabilization

ECBs are organic products such as straw, excelsior, or coconut fibers which decompose with UV light exposure. They improve ground stability, hold underlying soil in place, and retain moisture which nurtures seed germination and vegetation growth. Because they will decompose with time, they are best used in lighter applications where vegetation will eventually completely replace the erosion control properties of blankets. These blankets are heavily used in such applications as residential and commercial developments, highway medians and embankments, and golf courses.

Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRM’s) will provide permanent soil stabilization

TRMs are synthetic and are permanent. They are installed on land with steeper grades and in drainage situations where shear stresses and velocities can erode away soil, roots and plants. TRMs are typically used on ditch and channel bottoms and steep slopes. TRM’s are wonderful vegetated options in lieu of traditional rip-rap or other hard armoring techniques.
